Hydrofluoroolefins (HFO)
HFO – mixtures are classified as 4th generation refrigerants and are synthetic refrigerants with organic compounds of hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon. They were mainly developed to replace environmentally harmful HFC and CFC refrigerants. They are a good alternative because of there no ozone depletion potential and low global warming potential.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
The refrigerant R448A can be used as an example of a HFO mixture. It is non-flammable, non-toxic and colorless. It is mainly used as a replacement in R404A refrigeration systems and has a high energy efficiency. In addition, it has good material compatibility with common materials in refrigeration plants. Some HFO / HFO mixtures can form trifluoracetic acid (TFA) as a degradation product, which is poorly degradable in the environment.
